Phase Three - Fishing Shiel Memorial
The introduction to ‘Benchmark at Grinham’s Wood’ highlights a major aspect of employment in Horncliffe for many centuries - salmon fishing via coble and net. This once employed a great many people on the Tweed – but now restricted to a single fishing station at the river mouth. The point being many who returned after the War came back to the nets – a story worth recording.
Hence the intention to raise the funds necessary to re-purpose a derelict fishing shiel adjacent to Grinham’s Wood and utilise this as a memorial to an ancient way of life that’s now almost extinct. The plan is to stabilise the remains of the structure and build a viewing platform within. Also to provide an interpretation panel demonstrating how the fishing station operated - not so long ago.
